Larger Fridge – Are you not eating fresh enough?

Game of Thrones is one of the most beautiful as well as brutal shows of all time. A character in the show “HODOR” meant nothing until it meant “hold the door” in the climax. Since then I can’t stop picturing myself being a HODOR to the refrigerator in my house during my childhood.

I have grown up obsessing over Hollywood movies and their fully loaded refrigerators. They are always stuffed with fruits, cakes, pastries, ice creams, juices, milk jars, beer cans, etc. but whenever I am hungry and HODOR my fridge, it all feels so boring. And a question pops in my mind “How do their fridge manage to have so much?” I couldn’t find an appropriate answer until I grew up to be a woman who started cooking and buying her own fruits and vegetables. That’s when I realized how different freshly cooked and refrigerated food tastes.

The journey from being a bulky, expensive, and luxury item to every common man’s basic household appliance, refrigerators are a blessing to today’s working generation. It is an important invention of the industrial revolution which came out as a huge technological advancement of present days. It offers ways to preserve food and other products in any climatic conditions. With the emerging industry of refrigerators and its availability in various sizes and capacities, it does make me wonder, are we storing more food than required? Are we cooking more than required?  Is this technology making us lazy? And why are manufacturers making 1000L+ refrigerators for households?

As I was researching our dependency on these machines, I could find all sorts of articles, guidelines, instructions on ways to preserve food and keep it fresh for a longer time. But rarely anyone talks about how to include fresher food in our daily meal. Amidst the busy schedule, people find it easy to buy and cook in larger quantities and store it in the refrigerator. They cook meals in larger portions and store in the fridge to simplify their work. It seems to be a conscious decision even after being aware of the fact that fruits and vegetables lose their nutritional value when kept longer for a few days. According to Barbara P. Klein, a professor of food science and human nutrition at the University of Illinois, some fruits and vegetables can lose as much as 50 percent of their vitamin C and other nutrients in the ensuing week, depending on the temperature once they hit the refrigerator.

In order to keep a balance in your busy schedule and fresh eating habits, keep these things in mind next time you leave home for your vegetable market:

  1. Plan ahead, make a shopping list to avoid buying the unnecessary item
  2. Look for fresh locally grown produce and vegetable vendors because these fresh produce has traveled less so retaining its nutritional values.
  3. Avoid buying more by planning your visit to the grocery store twice a week rather than once a week
  4. Before putting your raw vegetables and fruits in the fridge ensure that it washed and cleaned properly
  5. If possible buy a refrigerator thermometer and monitor your fridge temperature. Try keeping your fridge around 40°F
  6. Store all your cooked and leftover food in covered containers
  7. Make sure you keep the leftover food in the fridge only after it cools down and makes sure that it is not at room temperature for more than 2-3 hours
  8. Make sure you clean your refrigerator twice a month and discard all the questionable food items stored in it
  9. And last but not the least, understand the portion sizes of your family members and cook in an appropriate amount

I know a fully-loaded fridge does look appealing but it does reflect your eating habits. A food when stored loses its nutritional value, color, texture with each day is spent in the refrigerators. In order to eat fresh food, I have incorporated my vegetable vendor visits during my evening walks. This did help me in storing less, eating green, and not overloading my fridge.

With adulting, I have realized that those Hollywood movies characters were not into healthy eating and were too lazy to cook. With me getting older and realizing this fact now I find my dog being a HODOR to the fridge. Every time I open the fridge he does sneak peeks into it and thinks there is a lot for him to eat.

PS: Do you know on an average we HODOR our fridge 15-20 times a day.
