Are you Monsoon Ready???
Jamun are in the season and whenever I see a cart piled with juicy plump Jamuns, my heart just melts away. I love eating fresh Jamuns. Nothing can match the satisfaction of tossing these juicy purple bites with some salt, see it release its juices and then biting into the sweetness. But, the season of fresh Jamuns is about to come to an end and I need to preserve it to last me a little while after the season is over. So, I decided to turn these little fruits into something I have loved since I was a child, fruit jam!! What is better, unlike store bought, this jamun jam is totally hand crafted.
The aroma of masala chai, piping hot samosas, crispy pakoras and, of course, the tart and juicy Jamun or the Indian wild plum — monsoons in India are made of these. We can bestow some extra points to this beloved blackish-purple fruit for fond childhood memories of purple-stained tongues and for its health benefits too.
During the season, it is common to see vendors sitting in the lanes of Lutyen’s Delhi selling this fruit, which is actually in abundance but has a limited window. The Jamun or the Java Plum, or the Black Plum as it is called by some, is a sweet sour fruit that has an astringent after taste. I used to enjoy it as a kid and love it still.
I have made this Jamun relish to go with any thing & everything you would like to pair it with spiked the relish with some green chillies & black salt and I love the way it tastes; fabulous with just that hint of chilli.
Jamun berries, organic cane sugar, black salt, green chilli, natural pectin
